The raven - Citizenship and commitment

We are now going to talk about the story The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe and see if the two values called commitment and citizenship belong to the story. This story’s theme and main focus is that about a man who just lost a very important person in his life, a woman called Lenore. He is seen very visibly hurt about the passing of the woman, thinking about her at all times, and the moment he heard a sound and id not encounter anything the first thing he thought of was her, and from this we can observe how much his mind has put itself in a state of guilt and constant reminding of her and her memory. This feelings are also used by Edgar Allan Poe in the form of The Raven, who comes to visit the man and does not leave him alone, constantly bugging him, annoying him, enraging him and making him go insane with the concussion of the Ravens words “nevermore”. This feelings and themes are very strong in the story, but in my point of view and opinion, these themes like obsession, rage and guilt have nothing to do with the values of citizenship and commitment. Something in the story that supports my point of view is the fact that he never talks to anyone in the story but the raven, who only responds with the words nevermore. He, the main character, does not show any values and emotions that are not sad or frightening. He especially doesn’t seem to show any connection to a country, as we could infer from the value fo citizenship, or a person, like what the value of commitment shows. The last one, he probably had when his loved one Lenore was alive, but since she passed, he is a state of pain and sadness, which is very common in people who are grieving. They tend to blame themselves only for their lost one’s death, obsessing over the fact that they’re not here anymore.  Citizenship is a legal relationship between a person and a country, the country they live in or moved to. Usually the country is the one he or she was born in, lives in, supports, and in return gets protection. A person is usually a citizen of the country where he or she is born, but sometimes a person will apply to change his or her citizenship to become a citizen in another country. There are countries which allow dual (two) citizenship, and countries which do not and commitment. A commitment is a promise or relationship we have with people, involving loyalty and duty. It usually evokes a strong sense of intention and focus. It typically is accompanied by a statement of purpose or a plan of action. Very often, we utilize this word in regard to proclamations we may make about the seriousness of our relationships. These are the meaning of our values. We can compare them to the story’s and what they try to convey, especially what the main character thinks about. He is a suffering man, and citizenship and commitment to not have to directly involve pain, sadness or suffering. He is obsessed, and citizenship is more of a political subject, but you can be obsessed with a commitment. He is angry because of what he can’t understand or control, and none of the values indicate anger. From this we can conclude that the values are not present in the story, but if we do a very deep analysis of the sentiments that are in the story we can find small but insignificant connections between them and our values
